Article Writing Tips - Going From the General to the Specific

There are many ways to skin a cat. My apologies to those who hate silly sayings like that and lovers of the feline population. Truth is, there are many ways to reach the same ends. With article writing, you don't have to follow just one way of doing it. I have one way that I teach most people because it's simple but it's not the be all and end up. In this article, I'm going to show you another simple way to write articles that takes very little time to map out. It's called going from the general to the specific. Let me show you how it works.

Going from the general to the specific is just that. You start with a very general topic and then expand on it by pointing out specific things. This works very well because it sets the reader up with a general premise and then allows you to expand on it without losing him in the process, something that is quite likely if you change topics altogether.

For example, let's say you're writing an article on violence in urban high schools. In the first paragraph, you'd start out talking about violence in high schools in general. Maybe you'll provide the reader with some statistics related to how many shootings, stabbings, and even fist fights there are yearly in urban high schools. In the next paragraph, you could point to a recent high school incident that was in the news and talk about it in detail. You can follow this path through the rest of the article until finally writing a brief summary.

Another example would be an article on favorite sports teams that somehow manage to lose the big game even though they were the heavy favorite. You could start the article with the premise that many times, the favorite team in a sporting event doesn't end up with the big prize. You could point out many sports such as the baseball World Series and the football Super Bowl. Then, in the paragraphs that follow, you can talk about very specific games, again, following up with a summary to conclude the article.

This is a very easy way to write articles. Start with a general premise and then give specific details pointing out how your original hypothesis is often true. These articles, when written in this form, almost write themselves. All you need to do is fill in the details.
